What is a Mala Necklace?

A mala is a strand of beads, traditionally 108 in number, used for centuries as a tool for meditation, intention-setting and mindfulness. The word "mala" comes from Sanskrit, meaning "garland" or "meditation garland." Practitioners use a mala much like a rosary — moving one bead at a time through the fingers while repeating a mantra, intention, or breath count, until the full circle of beads has passed.

But a mala is more than a counting tool. Each bead becomes an anchor point — a small, physical pause that brings you back into your body and your breath. Worn as a necklace, a mala becomes a wearable reminder of the intention you set with it.

The number 108 holds deep significance across yogic, Buddhist and Hindu traditions. It's considered a sacred number representing wholeness and completion — some traditions point to 108 sun salutations, 108 Upanishads, or the 108 energy lines said to converge at the heart chakra. A traditional mala includes 108 beads plus one additional "guru bead," which marks the beginning and end of the strand and serves as a point of gratitude or reflection.

Malas Today: Meaning Meets Modern Life

While rooted in ancient practice, malas have found a place in modern, everyday life — not only as a meditation tool but as intentional jewelry. Each stone carries its own energy and meaning, and each pendant or symbol can represent a specific archetype, energy or intention you want to carry with you.

At New Moon Collective, every mala is handmade in Bali using natural stones, hand-knotted with care, and designed to carry both beauty and meaning — from grounding fire agate to heart-centered amazonite.

Choosing a mala is often intuitive — many people find themselves drawn to a particular stone, color or collection before they even know its meaning. You might choose based on:

  • An intention or energy you want to invite in (grounding, transformation, softness, strength)

  • A stone whose properties resonate with what you're navigating right now

  • A collection whose archetype speaks to you — from the fierce, grounded energy of Wild Woman to the soft radiance of Angelic Soul

How to Wear and Use Your Mala

There's no single "right" way to wear a mala. Some wear it daily as jewelry, letting it serve as a quiet touchstone throughout the day. Others use it more formally — holding the beads during meditation, repeating a mantra or intention with each one, moving through the full 108 until returning to the guru bead.

However you choose to wear it, your mala is yours to define. Let it become a reminder — of your intention, your energy, and the frequency you choose to carry.
